5:56 PM, Tuesday, November 12th, 1996: John and Jane were fired yesterday. Ethan is gone too. They came in to work and did prep for the show and at 1:15 they were given the boot. They were off THAT DAY. Done. They are being replaced by the syndicated Gary Burbank out of Cincinnatti. You may be reading the last of my logs at WTVN. By my two year anniversary I hope to be somewhere else. Darryl is an asshole and has totally lost his mind. Syndication from 9AM to 6PM? What the Hell? The list now: Conners, Munch, Hansel, Cannon and me. Hey, I’m 5th now. I can honestly say I have the best show on WTVN. I want to see the positive for my career in this, but I can’t help thinking they’ll get some sort of syndication overnight to save money. How could it be any cheaper than me? Who knows. John Lane has been there for 12 years! How could they do that? I called up Ethan and talked to him for close to an hour and a half. It was so cold how they did it. Perry really has no control. I bet everyone is watching their backs now. Not gonna change anything eh? Oh, and of course that kills The Boyles during drive time. God was I close.   8:00 AM, Wednesday, November 13th, 1996: Well, I’ve actually calmed down a bit. I talked to Darryl and he said he hadn’t gotten any of my e-mails. What? I’m not sure whether to believe him. He said about J&J that he just wanted the afternnoons stronger. Burbank is big, but wow. Talked on the phone all day. Angela, KP, Jeff, John, of course Ethan. I have a meeting with Darryl on Tuesday. I asked him for the meeting. Thank God it wasn’t the other way around. Oh, and get this: Jeff said Darryl asked to talk to Cannon on Thursday. Hmm....might he just do it? In the paper today they talked about how WTVN is striving for that under 50 crowd. I am there. It seems obvious to me. And if they’d throw John, a guy who’s been there 12 years, has 3 kids one a senior in highschool and making $60,000+. A 60 year old overnight guy at $30,000 is truly expendable, and I’m cheaper. Either way, my resume is typed and ready.   6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Thursday, November 14th, 1996: Helped produce Munch. It was really unneeded, but I wanted to feel the tone of the station after firings. Found out Billy Ray is done. Maybe an opening for the station to sponsor The Boyles? And Darryl came into the studio to talk to Munch and KP, waved at me in the producer’s room, and never stopped in and said hi. Very stupid of me to observe, but Bill would’ve said something. I really have strange feelings about him.   8:00 PM - 6:00 AM, Friday - Saturday, November 15th - 16th, 1996: SHOW 205 Well, I, like no one else at the station, fielded calls about John and Jane. And there were quite a few. I stayed neutral and stressed the lack of stability in this job. Ratings, everything. It shouldn’t be that big of a surprise. I did say adamantly that I was worried about the station being syndicated for 9 hours in the middle of the day. I am. Otherwise it was nice to let people vent. Had Bill Tooker call and say he was the senior writer for Gary Burbank’s show. I didn’t really believe him, and then he faxed me all of these clips from newspapers and whatnot telling the whole story. He lives in Grandview. Cool, maybe he likes The Boyles enough to.... The night went quickly. I hope I don’t get in trouble for bringing them up. Fuck that, how can you tell people not to talk about it? We’ll see. Lester is guest hosting from 12-1 tomorrow. We’ll see if my voice can hold out.   10:30 PM - 7:15 AM, Saturday - Sunday, November 16th - 17th, 1996: SHOW 206 So I’m 2 seconds from starting the show and Darryl is in the producer’s room. I’ve never been so nervous in my entire life. Yes I have, I’m being dramatic. It’s just that I don’t think he’s really ever heard the show, and of all the shows, LESTER guest hosting! I almost turned back, but I didn’t and the response was amazing. A dozen calls, and Darryl was laughing! KP and Angela kept typing to me, keep it up, Darryl likes it! It was great, and I could’ve gone all night! It was wonderful. My voice didn’t bother me at all. I actually got in a crack on John and Jane that made Darryl piss himself laughing. I felt kinda bad, but as Lester it was funny. Mary from German Village tried to get a date with Lester, it was awesome. Ha. That hour was great, and it actually made the rest of the night go quicker. Finally a good Sunday! The next hour was buckeyes and how they almost lost to Indiana! The play calling is pathetic. I’m telling you, I’ve never seen such a talented team run it up the middle so many times. Jesus. We’re gonna get our asses kicked by Arizona State. We should get by Michigan. Hopefully they’ll see the error of their ways and mix it up against the Blue. Fuck, are we gonna repeat last year? The Buckeyes theme carried the 2:00 and 5:00 hours as well. Most people agreed with me about the play calling. But a lot of people said I wasn’t a real fan. I was trying to explain that I’m worried. A win isn’t just a win unless it’s the last game of the year. Your last win of the year can be ugly. The others can’t be because next week is always bigger. And we’re getting worse and worse. (Sigh) Who knows. Anyway, I’m having a meeting with Darryl on Wednesday, and I’m asking for a raise, and I’m gonna see what he plans to do from 8-11 on Sundays! I want it bad!
