- This is such a
wonderful surprise. Last night while trying to get to
sleep I was already tearing down my camera and equipment
in my head... nothing else to shoot on this trip. I was
only able to pull off 3 videos (1 more coming this month,
and 1 saved for next Christmas). Quick trip, but
fun...
-
- ...and then
I got this text from my Uncle Tim at 8:45am
EST:
-
- "We have a
couple sleds you can borrow if you'd like to try to slide
down the hill at Colerain"
-
- I ran up the
stairs like I was 10 years old and looked out the back
door and actual, real, snow. Not a dusting, not the hard
crappy kind - but heavy packing snow.
-
- <blink>
-
- I ran downstairs and
SHOOK the kids awake.
-
- "It snowed, it's
snowing, we're gonna go sledding..."
-
- They jumped out of
bed like it was Christmas morning and did the exact same
thing I did. Instantly dressed and off we went. I grabbed
my camera and got what will probably be one of my
favorite VR180 videos of their childhood...
-
-
- Now to be completely
up front, three years ago they did indeed have their
first real snow day at Big Bear here in LA - but it was
at a snow park where the 4 of us plus Oma paid $200 to
ride an innertube down a hill a couple times.
-
- Read that shit again.
In fact, read the whole damn thing here:
-

-
- Man they were so
little...
-
- Besides the cost it
wasn't actually sledding. It felt like we went to a snow
themed amusement park and while it was better than
nothing, I was so bummed they'd never have that feeling
of waking up and seeing it snowed and then going
ACTUAL sledding. You know, where you keep going down
the hill trying to get further and dragging that thing
back up the hill for hours? It's a feeling of
accomplishment you just can't really explain.
-
- Incredibly, two weeks
after the money slide I had to rush back to Ohio for
my grandfather's funeral only to get caught in a winter
snow emergency WITHOUT MY FAMILY. Finally,
actual real snow and the kids couldn't play in it. It's
just such a rare thing in Columbus anymore. They go
literal years without any snow to speak of whatsoever.
Which is exactly what I told the kids before this year's
trip. Please don't get your hopes up. That's just not how
Columbus has worked for like 40 years. In fact, even
during my childhood it started becoming more and more
rare. Nothing like the snowfall my parents
got...
-
- ...but it happened.
And it happened when they were still young enough to
really enjoy it. I can't believe it. They will
remember this for the rest of their lives and so far,
2025 is off to quite a start!
