12:01 AM, Tuesday,
August 14th, 2007:
Let's be
honest: Blogs suck. They're boring, repetitive,
self-important writing excercises that are rarely
interesting to anyone but the writer. Few people have
lives intriguing enough to warrant such diatribes (if
they did when would they have time to write about them
online?) and yet the internet is filled with them.
What makes me think anyone would follow
mine?
Simply put it's
the longest running videoblog in the world. I don't
mean I stare at a camera and talk, I actually
produce a short video for every single entry. I'm
telling the story of trying to make it in LA and
you actually see it unfold. I'm honest to a fault and
try desperately to chronicle how I feel no matter
how stupid, arrogant, scared, lazy, insincere or
pathetic it makes me look. My purpose is not to make
people like me, it's to make people know
me.
So my
IP erasing my mailing list has set off a series
of changes to The Journey that require basically a
re-introduction of what this thing is. I'd venture to
say the majority of the people reading this had no
idea about this part of the site as they knew me from
various other projects. So, what's new...
...well my IP of
course. They had the audacity to ask me why I was
cancelling after so many years. Cute. My dad reminded
me that this was actually the second time my
mailing list was erased since 2001 and that's just
unforgiveable man. That, and I was paying $20 a month
for 1GB of space and 10GB of bandwidth. When the site
crashed during Let's Bomb Iran I should've friggin'
jumped ship - but I was loyal. No longer. I now
have 300GB and 3TB of bandwidth per month which brings
me to the big change - hosting my videos at near
DVD quality.
Now, because
I have close to 1000 with no signs of stopping,
I still have to be discerning - but they're 10
times bigger than before. I used to brag about a
compression ratio of 1MB to 1 minute... and now I'm at
over 11MB per minute. For perspective: one Egos
episode is now bigger than all 100 videos posted in
2000. It thrills me to finally be able to show things
at broadcast quality. I painstakingly went back and
re-did all of 2007 at the higher resolution. The
difference really is remarkable. You could easily burn
this to a DVD and watch it on TV....
...of course that
still leaves this YouTube link which I have to
ask you - please hit it anyway. LOL. Please, please,
please sign up and post comments and rate me 5 stars
to counter-balance the 13 year olds being dickheads
(no offense Crooked X). YouTube is also vital for
another reason and that is unmatchable compatibility
with every single computer I've ever been on. Gone are
the days of worrying about which version of windows
you have or if your mac can play x file... it all
works on YouTube. Plus it has feedback
boards...
...which also
means the other big change - no more Journey Boards.
:-( It killed me to erase all of that but I had
little choice as the robots destroyed it, and it
needed to be upgraded which would've erased all the
comments anyway - it was time. But never fear, you can
still be part of the club by joining The
Journey
Supporters
on YouTube.
"But ADAM!! - I
was a JOURNEY PLAYER. I had an emblem man -
HOW CAN YOU DO THIS?" To
newcomers, "Journey Players" were anyone who had been
mentioned by name somewhere within the pages of The
Journey. So if you fall into that category - by all
means you may also join The
Journey
PLAYERS
on YouTube. Now what exactly this will mean is
anyone's guess - but by all means jump in. It's fun.
And of course the
new mailing list full of people that are probably a
little overwhelmed by this monstrosity. "Dude,
I thought Bomb Iran was funny...there's no way
I'm watching 650 videos". Of course not...it's like
I say on the intro page: Just read the current
month and see where your curiosity takes you. The
layout of The Journey allows you to skim through the
months at lightening speed and click what looks
interesting... but I do admit - this is pretty
intense...
The
true start of The Journey is
JANUARY 2000.
In 1999 I was still in Columbus doing 4tvs
and I just blogged about the shows.
I later put those entries in "Journey
Format" just as I'm trying to do with 1997
& 1998 when I have time. Those are
for the hardcore, but do have some gems. If
you're a newcomer just read the
current
month
and see where your curiosity leads. I know
several people who have tackled the whole
beast in about a week. Receptionist gigs are
good for that...
