- Well this came out of
nowhere...
-
- ...so a couple days
ago I'm watching opening night in the NBA - at a
commercial break I check my phone and see that not
only did they announce the Galaxy XR (Google's headset)
they released it... TODAY. I hit buy now, I buy now...
and have local pickup the following morning (yesterday).
WHAAAAAAAAAAAT? Of course what follows is a very strange
launch story which I cover in the
unboxing...
-
-
- And of course now
we're left with whether or not I'm going to keep this.
And after a day with it I can confidently say, no,
I am not. Although half the price of the Vision Pro,
it still leads me to the same place: if it can't replace
my work headset (which it could for editing but not
presenting) then what is it really for? Quest 3 does
EVERYTHING... and honestly it just does it better. And
smoother. The whole resolution debate and OLED/LCD debate
in headsets is really missing the point: what we have now
is more than sufficient. My shit looks amazing on the
Quest 3 - even streamed (as long as it's 8k). Does it
look better on a better display? Some things do... but
it's NOT a tradeoff for how hard it is to put it on
someone else's head (the auto IPD thing HAS to be
able to be turned off) and I do truly believe the FOV is
less on the Galaxy XR - so who cares about the deeper
blacks at that point.
-
- So I think I'm done
believing in any other headset except Meta's unles it's
SUPER light adn has a wider FOV. We're fine with
resolution - what we need is a smaller form factor and
goodness do we need at least a 150+ degree horizontal
field of view. We just do. 110 is the absolute floor. But
hey - what a surprising little chapter. It was a fun
morning for me and Talya...
