9:33 AM, Sunday, October 16th, 2022:

So this is the actual first VRlog where I attempt to bring you into an event. It's filled with problems, but my goodness did I learn a LOT. The good news? This is as bad as it will ever look... and it still looks really cool...

So much to say here...

The focus issue is insane, but I spent an entire day (like 12+ hours) with a tape measure and INCH MARKERS while reading out the letters of DUAL FISHEYE that are on the focus ring to find a pretty reasonable idea of where that ring should be. Which is, truly fucking insane, because it's 2022, and you should easily be able to magnify into the picture and see your goddamned focus. On this lens you cannot do that while in 8k mode and even if you bring it down to 2k they simply change the view to one lens. Not close enough. It's a fisheye lens and what you need to focus on is directly in the middle. Sure there's zebras to get "close" but again, the depth of field is so intense, close is blurry. I needed to be able to hand my subject the tape measure, bring it back to the lens and go "Got it, it should be on the S of the DUAL FISHEYE part of the focus ring" and then shoot. Would've been perfect on the shot with the kids on the boat looking back at everything. Instead - EVERYTHING is blurry because I had to guess.

Now that I have all the numbers I'll be able to eyeball MUCH of it (once past 3-4 feet it's a crapshoot no matter what) and the resulting shots will be good. But as my parenthesis implied: after 3-4 feet? None of it is really focused. Which is kind of a bummer because for this amount of money? Goddamn. Why does my iphone look THAT much better?

Now, close-up? Like in the first vlog? Wonderful. I'm thrilled... I'm gonna have a ball with this thing... but it's very hard looking at blutrry images in VR especially when you're used to playing games where the shit in the distance is perfect. I throw on Real-Fishing VR which is all done qwith photogrammetry? Everything is in focus. Everything. Looks gorgeous. Fuck. I want that. I thought I was getting that. I am not...

...but I'm not giving up - this video is still the best example of feeling like you're THERE and for me personally? I captured my kids at 10 and 8 1/2. Whew. Like, these moments are slipping away and I cannot wait to capture more. With this workflow, being able to share it here willbe few and far between, but we have a good start and so much more to share.

I'm also still waiting on being accepted as a content creator for Oculus TV. Or is it Meta TV now? Well it's Oculus Media Studio that I'm uploading to so who knows. I am clearly playing up the Guinness thing to hopefully gain some favor. I mean, jesus - no one else has that, please just accept me. There's no money in it, so I can't fathom why they'd deny me. I EVEN TOOK OUT THE FUCKS! LOL.

But the advantage of being on the Quest's TV app is that you know everyone watching is actually watching IN the headset. That's the problem with YouTube, anyone can watch it on their phone. As the creator you really want to get a feel for the amount of people that are seeing it the way it's meant to be seen. Man... this feels so much like the beginning of The Journey with video on the internet it actually hurts my brain a bit...

...but it also warms my heart. Hopefully I'm approved soon!
