It's hard to believe it's been 11 years since I've written about Nintendo... but yeah - the gap really has been that long. Life took over, games meant less and I knew until I had kids I just wouldn't get back into games. Last year with the advent of VR I lost myself a bit (the Vive is still my go to if I have free time to escape) but that was more of a business purchase for the VR Delorean ride I'm gonna make.

No after watching Mario Kart videos with the kids it was clear they were ready. Of course I got Zelda (which they also love to watch) but I didn't really think I was going to be this amazed. The surprise is honestly because Nintendo is completely faking everyone out. They left the console industry this year, they just did it really, really well and no one seems to be noticing it. The Nintendo Switch is touted as a hybrid because you can plug it into your TV and take it portably with you... buuuuuuuuuuuut make no mistake: it's simply their new Gameboy. It's powerful enough to be plugged into the TV and look like their last generation console (which was already underpowered) so they're kinda faking everyone out.

Now, it's AMAZING that we have a portable system like this in our hands. It's a Wii U portable. Whew. That's quick. The Wii U was released in 2012. So, I'm stunned. But make no mistake, they just repackaged that power into a portable and were smart enough to make it capable of plugging into your TV. It also has the gimmick of taking the sides off and turning into 2 controllers, which is certainly cool... but the fact that their two biggest games are games that are presently on the old system with ZERO graphical improvements tells you all you need to know: they made a great new portable and simply aren't telling anyone that they're not coming out with another console. Their next machine will be a sequel to this... and that will be the end of it. Why compete with the PS4 and Xbox1? There's hardly any competition in the handheld market and honestly - IT'S THEM.

ANNNNNNNNNNNNNYWAY. I'm digging it since I completely skipped over the Wii U and these games are all new to me. Zelda is a bit of genius and the Switch Mario Kart is the best one yet. Just, whew. So much new stuff. And the kids of course are DIGGING it...

So we've entered this stage of family life: the kids can play games and we can all play as a family. Man, that happened quick!
