-
- Ha. So guess what
Mark said:
-
-
- Jesus is that ever
cryptic. Wow. At least I can tell the whole story in
here because there's a chance it's NEVER told.
Ugh.
-
- So I did call
Mark on Tuesday and tell him the situation and he
agreed that not only don't they own any rights to any
of my ideas without a contract, they never actually
GAVE ideas. I'm free to do what I want and he
understands my reticence to EVER work with a company
that would blow me off like that. I forwarded HALF of
what I had sent them and he literally said:
"Jesus! Very thorough... I can't believe they haven't
got back to you." It really is crazy. He said, let's
meet Thursday and hash out a new plan.
-
- We spent a good 2+
hours talking and the funny thing is, that when he got
here he was digging "Dream Yards" and not feeling
"Chasing Heroes" and by the end, that completely
flipped. I think he just had to sit and talk to
me and get a better feel for what I'm capable of.
Chasing Heroes is more of a leap than a backyard
makeover show, but I just feel it has to be
first. I think every single "hero" celebrity
you get to this backyard further cements me as the guy
to HOST Dream Yards... not the other way around.
We ended things with him saying: we have to shoot Dave
Grohl.
-
- Uhm, yes we do,
sir. Yes we do.
-
- He said if we shot
that episode in quick, 10 minute form, we could sell
this. He needs a reel to get a few green lights to
SHOOT this, but that's the key... and he thinks he can
get Dave Grohl. So, well, I do a new focused reel
about "Chasing Heroes" and probably also one for
"Dream Yards" just in case and we're back in
business.
-
- ...and yeah,
there's that whole thing. As much as I admire the dude
for falling on the sword before, I don't want to
go through this shit again - can we please get some
confirmation from your agent at Paradigm before
I sign? And he of course wants to know we're in
business before he even includes him so we're at a bit
of a crossroads.
-
- But you already
saw the video, so...
-
- He said, point
blank, "Adam, if I can't end up selling this,
I will do EXACTLY what I did before and let
you out. If Collins Avenue then shows interest,
they're all yours." But he did warn me about that. He
believes they will own 100% of the idea. 100%.
I will be "talent". It's customary to see people
in my position get $500-$1000 per show. With Mark it's
50/50 on the production end which, honestly, is a
little fucking insane considering just how much of
this is MEEEEEEEEEE, but that's the industry and I'm
used to it. He has the contacts, he has a reality
track record, I don't. So I'm happy giving up
50%. 100% and just being talent is
insulting...
-
- ...then again,
THEY'VE NEVER FUCKING RESPONDED. It's
NEARLY A MONTH. FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
Seriously, if I was Jeff Collins and I knew
that my development team brought talent in, pitched
this, and then did THIS? I would be fucking
livid. You don't treat INTERNS like this, let alone
someone you're trying to go into business with.
Unreal.
-
- Then again, their
"genre" direction did help get my brain moving which
is certainly appreciated. I just find it stunning that
it lead me AWAY from them. When will they ever contact
me again? I'm glad I had the balls to say "fuck
you, I'm moving on..." and I DID. Now I go to
work on the reel and presumably we start shooting the
Dave Grohl episode in a couple weeks.
DAVE FUCKING GROHL IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Dude, if The Foo Fighters are playing minigolf in my
backyard this year? I will have to re-evaluate my
life. Like, I'll have to have a "new normal" moment
like none-other. That's just insanity. I mean,
Prince played Foo Fighters songs in the middle of his
fucking Superbowl chalftime show because, DUH - it's
DAVE FUCKING GROHL and they're incredible.
And goddamnit, Prince would've done this show. I KNOW
it. That's what is special about this idea, man.
People that would NEVER do reality would totally come
to some dude's backyard because they know HE built it
and HE made this happen. It's not fabricated, there's
no gimmick - just a dude with a mid-western
sensibility believing he could do something and doing
it. That's it. So if they're back there the sky is the
goddamned limit. It's the moment that I truly
believe I've created something amazing.
-
- I half-believe
it now, we're on the precipice to all-out glee. This
is fun. It's date-night though and I need to go
celebrate. I signed 4 goddamned contracts today
(2 partnership development deals and 2 talent
development deals) and I finally feel like I'm back in
control. Whew. What a goddamned month THIS has been.
OH! THE EGOS
LINE IN THE VIDEO!
-
- So, in putting
together what this show would be, it relies on all of
my talents to get in FRONT of my heroes. From
construction, to animation, to acting, to singing, to
drone operator, to jesus - what haven't I proven
I can do well? It's nuts. Mark had mentioned
I should have a crew that I direct to go out and
do things and IN THE ABOVE video is the
moment I realize just who would be that crew: The
Egos. Duh. I have these personalities willing to do
and say shit I've never felt comfortable saying. Gary
can go to a club at midnight and mack on a chick while
trying to get a number to get to the next stage of the
chase - Spencer CLEARLY can fit in where
I cannot, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. It's
an arena where the characters are obviously me
(because split-screens basically confuse people
because we look so different) and I can use them
at will to get where we need to go. It's fucking
perfect. Holy shit. THEY. ARE. BACK.
-
- Now... let's make
that reel.
