:-) That's a totally unnecessary
picture. Mixing audio from a keyboard/mic and a
TV certainly doesn't require a diagram, but it
was an homage to my "flux capacitor" drawing a
dozen years ago...
Fun to feel a little jolt of
electricity. I kinda think it's because I rarely
buy electronics unless they help my career and I love
researching for deals on things like that. So, what
the hell is all this - and how did it
happen?
That song. That haunting,
remarkably sad, hypnotic song hasn't left my mind and
I've been aching to perform it. I mentioned in
the last entry that it felt like a crossroads, but
then logic takes over and it kinda kills it. In fact,
this is exactly what happened when I thought of
4tvs. The initial idea, then it fades 'cause it seems
daunting, and then BOOM - you just jump. You buy the 4
TVs and see what happens. Well, I haven't bought
anything, but last night I solved the one big
stumbling block to me performing live... who the fuck
wants to hear ballads all night. Getting together a
band is pretty expensive around these parts as anyone
worth a shit gets paid by the lead guy to play.
Remember when I played that gig with Adam Darling
in March '09? Everyone was paid but me (and I was
happy to help him, not bitching at all). Point is, it
costs a fortune. And, as you all know, you pay the
VENUE to boot. No, LA is not the place to start
something up.
As well, the songs I'm doing?
Their hearts are stuck inside the actual Journey
videos. The video and the audio for "Let Them Drown"
are absolutely intertwined. I want to tell the
story of the song, I want to show people the
video - AND I want to perform it
live...
...and voila. You perform with a
big-ass HDTV, you tell some stories... and you share
some songs. And because of the technology leap in the
past 10 years, I can play everything off of a
freaking USB drive in 1080p high definition
effortlessly. <shakes head> Also? I can
throw everything in my CAMRY and go to a gig.
<shakes head again> Now, to me? It's nowhere
near as impressive as 4tvs was. But people never
understood what it took to do that show, and
I guarantee if within this live show I did
one tiny piece of interaction with ONE EGO and
myself before a song? People would be just as "Wowed".
It's what I learned with doing The iPad Comic earlier
this year. If people can understand the technology?
Then it's impressive. Even though doing 2 people at
once is a thousand times easier to do? People grasp
what you're doing. With 4tvs? Most everyone was
baffled - so they stopped thinking about it and really
just felt like there were 5 people onstage. 'Cause
once you can't figure it out? You just stop trying and
enjoy the show. There's such a thing as "too
good" when it comes to a live show. It's the same
reason HUGE magic tricks lose their
impressiveness. In fact, wow - that's the analogy for
sure. Make the Statue of Liberty disappear? Yawn. Do
sleight of hand card tricks in a small space a foot
from someone? That shit sticks with the audience.
Finding the line is crucial. This may be
it...
...or it may not. Heh. Bottom
line? I just don't care. I want to
perform and put more energy into music in the coming
year. Throw a couple tunes on iTunes and try and get
out there and sing. Venues will be very difficult
though, because this will more than likely be a
theater piece. I'll have to rent out a small theater,
and sell seats to cover my expense... not sure how
I'll get people out more than once actually... hmmm,
more roadblocks. LOL. Meh, I really just don't care.
The thought of performing this show makes me smile.
I need to smile.
